Netherlands stocks up on salt for winter season

The Netherlands public works department Rijkswaterstaat is already stocking up on salt for the winter season. The first salt shipment, containing 3 million kilograms of salt, will arrive at the Rijkswaterstaat salt warehouse in Raamdonksveer on Tuesday, ANP reports.

In total the Rijkswaterstaat is supplementing its stockpiles with 75 million kilograms of salt, up to a total of over 200 million kilograms. The salt is stored in four central warehouses and 56 regional support points.

Salt is sprinkled on the Dutch roads to combat iciness and slickness during winter conditions. The Rijkswaterstaat has 546 gritters and 350 snow plows at its disposal to deploy.
