German ATM bombing ends in Utrecht car crash

An ATM bombing in Germany early on Tuesday morning, ended in a car crash in the city of Utrecht. The perpetrators fled afoot and the police are still looking for them, AD reports.

The bombing happened in Wessel, a few dozen kilometers from the border at Arnhem. The German police gave chase and called in their Dutch colleagues when the Audi the perpetrators were driving crossed the border into the Netherlands.

The Dutch police chased the ATM bombers over the A12 and into Nieuwegein. The police lost sight of the car on A.C. Verhoefweg. It crashed a few kilometers away, at the Anne Frank square in the Kanaleneiland neighborhood.

The perpetrators fled further on foot. The police are searching for them, but so far without success.

The police called in specialists to search the car for explosives that may have been used in the ATM bombing. Nothing was found. The car, an Audi with German license plates, was towed away for further investigation.

Whether the so-called Audi gang is behind this ATM bombing is not yet clear. The Audi gang is known for stealing fast cars, like Audis, committing burglaries and ATM bombings in Germany and then fleeing to the Netherlands. According to AD, the gang consists of about 250 criminals from the Utrecht region
