Detainee commits suicide in Amsterdam police custody

A detainee committed suicide in a detention center in Amsterdam on Sunday. The man of Southern European descent was found dead when guards took him lunch, the police announced.

Emergency services were called in, but attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.

The man was taken into custody on Friday. There were no signs that something was wrong, the police write in a statement on their website. It is not clear why the man was in custody.

The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at the police, will investigate the death. A forensic investigation will also be done.

The police will provide no further information.
