Berlin attack suspect Anis Amri spotted on CCTV in Nijmegen: Dutch prosecutor

Anis Amri, the main suspect behind an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin on December 19th, was almost certainly in Nijmegen on December 21st, the Public Prosecutor said, according to NOS. A man matching Amri's description can be seen on surveillance camera footage at Nijmegen train station.

Footage of the rest of the station is still being investigated, but the Public Prosecutor has no doubt that it is Amri. The Prosecutor also believes that Nijmegen station is where Amri got the SIM card that led the authorities to take a closer look at the Netherlands as a possible escape route.

Earlier today French and Italian media reported that a SIM card was found in Amri's backpack after he was gunned down by the Italian police. This type of SIM card was handed out for free in the Dutch cities of Nijmegen, Breda and Zwolle between December 20th and 22nd.

According to NOS, it is not clear when and in what direction Amri left Nijmegen. Though it is certain that he was gunned down by the Italian police in Milan a day and a half after being spotted in Nijmegen. French media reports that he took a bus from Amsterdam to the French city of Lyon and traveled to Milan by train from there.

Dutch parliamentarians are shocked by reports that Amri managed to travel through the Netherlands undetected. PVV leader Geert Wilders demanded that parliament be called back from Christmas break so that this matter can be debated.
