Shut down Den Haag's red light district say Christian politicians
Christian party CDA's plan to close down The Hague's led right district on Doubletstraat seems to be getting closer to a reality. Foundation Non Nobis wants to move the prostitution zone, according to Den Haag FM.
"Non Nobis wants to put down a building where all sex workers - preferably also those on Geleenstraat - can offer their services in a transparent and secure environment", CDA leader in The Hage Daniell Koster said to the broadcaster.
The CDA in the city has been working to close Doublestraat because of the inconvenience it causes to surrounding neighborhoods. The city council decided that this is only possible if there is a "mature private initiative" to start a prostitution area elsewhere in the city.
According to the CDA, Non Nobis' plan has many advantages. "The sex workers will be less dependent on pimps and operators, and can perform their profession in a proper way. In addition, prostitution will disappear from the residential area and will be centered on a legal spot."
Non Nobis is not only focusing on The Hague, but also on other cities in the Netherlands, according to newspaper AD. The foundation's plans are aimed at helping sex workers get ahead. "We will be the owner of the property, operators rent the workspace from us and lease it to the prostitutes. We would prefer to see a collection of sex workers as operator." foundation president Mart Breedeveld said to the newspaper. "We make them less dependent on pimps and operators."
The prostitutes pay their rent to a central office, where they can also deposit their daily earnings if they want. Non Nobis wants to use the profits to, for example, set up pension schemes for prostitutes.
