D66 the largest party in 4 of the 5 large Dutch cities; GL-PvdA still top in Amsterdam

Voters in the five large Dutch cities liked Rob Jetten’s campaign. The D66 was the party with the most votes in Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, and Eindhoven in yesterday’s parliamentary election. GroenLinks-PvdA suffered a significant loss in Amsterdam, but remained the largest party in the Dutch capital, according to data from the ANP Election Service. So far, the D66 and CDA received better results in every municipality, while GroenLinks-PvdA and the PVV saw worse results everywhere.

Amsterdam

With 80 percent of the votes counted, GroenLinks-PvdA is the largest with 27.4 percent of the votes. The D66 received 23.4 percent. Two years ago, GL-PvdA won over a third of the Amsterdam vote, and the D66 just under 10 percent.

The VVD dropped from he second to the third largest party, going from 11.8 to 9.4 percent of the vote. The PVV lost ground in the capital and now holds 7.3 percent of the votes, putting the far-right party in fifth place below DENK (7.7%).

Rotterdam

The PVV lost significant ground in Rotterdam and is now behind both the D66 and GroenLinks-PvdA. Two years ago, the far-right party came out as the largest in the port city. The PVV dropped from 21.5 to 15.8 percent of the votes in the city.

The D66 made significant gains, rising from 7 to 17.1 percent. GL-PvdA is a close second with 16.9 percent, a loss of 3.1 percent. DENK won slightly more votes and is in fourth place (from 9.9% to 10.4%). The VVD is in fifth place, dropping from 11.7 to 9.4 percent.

The Hague

In The Hague, one in five residents voted for the D66, a massive gain from 8 percent of votes two years ago. GroenLinks-PvdA’s share fell from 19 to just over 16 percent. After being the largest party two years ago, the PVV is down to third place with just under 16 percent of the votes. The CDA and JA21 both gained ground in The Hague and ended up in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Utrecht

The D66 won 26.7 percent of Utrecht’s vote, narrowly defeating GroenLinks-PvdA, which got 26.1 percent. The D66 climbed from 11.5 percent two years ago, and GL-PvdA dropped from 34.9 percent.

The VVD is the third largest party in Utrecht with 8.6 percent of the votes (11.3% in 2023). PVV came fourth with 6.8 percent (9.9% in 2023), and the CDA fifth with 6.6 percent (1.8% in 2023).

Eindhoven

D66 is the largest party by a wide margin in Eindhoven, receiving 22.2 percent of the votes. GL-PvdA got 17.4 percent and the PVV 14.3 percent. That’s a significant gain for the D66 (8.6% in 2023) and a loss for GL-PvdA (21.1% in 2023).

The VVD lost 2 percentage points and is in fourth place with 12.3 percent of the votes. The CDA’s share more than quadrupled to 9.3 percent, putting the Christian Democrats in fifth place.
