Three new nursing homes on inspectorate's blacklist

The Healthcare Inspectorate added three new nursing homes to its black list. Cato from The Hage, Care Residence Zonnestraal from Hilversum and Avondrust in Veenendaal all performed below par and are now under increased supervision, AD reports.

The Inspectorate started the list this past summer. At the launch, 11 nursing homes were on the blacklist. Five of them are still on the list. They are: Careyn, Humanitas Laurens, Beweging 3.0 and Warande. An intervention team was sent to Careyn - the first time this ever happened. Careyn is one of the largest institutions in the country, with 29 nursing homes in the provinces of Utrecht, Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland. It accommodates 2,400 people.

The three newcomers to the list are all small institutions. Before being added to the blacklist, they were all on the list of 150 nursing institutions that were at an increased risk of their quality dropping below standard. According to State Secretary Martin van Rijn of Public Health, 111 of these 150 nursing institutions increased their quality and no longer need extra supervision.

"Let me be clear: I want the quality to improve as soon as possible in all nursing homes where it is needed. Fortunately by sitting on top of it, real progress was made in the last period", Van Rijn said, according to the newspaper. "At 111 institutions, the additional supervision is now unnecessary. Where improvements are needed, the inspectorate acts."
