Young suspects involved in human trafficking: Rapporteur

The suspects involved in human trafficking are often young people, according to National Rapporteur on Human Trafficking Corinne Dettmeijer. A fifth of these suspects are younger than 23 years old, some are even still underage, NOS reports. Dettmeijer finds it very concerning that such young people are involved in such serious crimes. The most common variant of human trafficking is prostitution, in which the young perpetrators are mostly so-called "loverboys". The suspects are mostly male, according to an investigation the Rapporteur did on human trafficking cases between 2011 and 2015. 45 percent are from the Netherlands. The others come from Bulgaria, Romania, Suriname, Morocco and Turkey among others. Victims and perpetrators usually come from the same country. The report also showed that the number of human trafficking cases dropped by nearly 15 percent.
