Increase in seriously delayed flights to and from Netherlands
Between June 21st and September 20th, a total of 1,261 flights to and from the Netherlands were unnecessarily cancelled or delayed by more than 3 hours. That is a significant increase compared to 982 flights in the same period in 2015 and 853 in 2014, BN De Stem reports based on figures received from EUclaim.
If a flight is delayed for more than three hours, passengers are entitled to 350 euros in compensation for EU flights and 600 euros for intercontinental flights. EUclaim helps passengers in collecting this compensation.
According to the claim organization, a total of 778 flights were cancelled and 730 were delayed for more than three hours between June 21st and September 20th. In 84 percent of the cases, the cancellation or delay was avoidable, which means passengers could claim compensation. That amounts to a total of 1,261 flights.
"The increase is mainly due to problems with Vueling and TUI. They have little reserve to deal with problems." Paul Vaneker of EUclaim said to the newspaper.
Claim company Vlucht-vertraagd.nl confirmed this to BN De Stem. Many companies' flight schedule is so tight, there is no room to deal with delays. "The more they fly, the more they earn. If one flgith is delayed, the next flight falls over like dominoes." a spokesperson said.
