Gerrit Zalm to resign from ABN Amro earlier than expected

Gerrit Zalm will be stepping down as CEO of ABN Amro next year, instead of in May 2018 when his contract runs out, the bank announced on Tuesday. The bank’s supervisory board will announce his successor and exact date of departure at a later date, NU.nl reports. “After a split, a merger and IPO, he decided to make way for a new CEO, who can lead the bank for a long period. The supervisory board respects his decision”, the bank said in a statement. The process of finding Zalm’s successor already started. Zalm started working at ABN Amro in 2009, when the bank was fully owned by the state. Among other things, Zalm led the integration of nationalized components of Fortis and ABN Amro and the new bank’s IPO. On Monday ABN Amro announced plans to cut up to 1,375 jobs by 2020.
