Parliament halts automatic organ donor registration proposal
The D66's plan to have every Dutch citizen automatically registered as an organ donor, unless he specifically indicates that he does not want this, is dead. The CDA decided to go against the plan, thereby making a parliamentary majority.
The VVD, PVV, ChristenUnie and SGP already opposed the plan. With the CDA joining the "no" group, the majority of the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, is against automatic organ donor registration.
The CDA decided to oppose the plan because the party found it unclear whether automatic registration would actually lead to more organ transplant, according to the Telegraaf. The party is also concerned that people who can not read or write well will end up organ donors against their will.
The current arrangement in the Netherlands is that everyone must choose whether or not to e an organ donor after death and register their decision. If you are not registered, the decision will be left to a family member.
