Woman accused of stealing €200,000 from grandfather could get prison

The Public Prosecutor demanded a 10 month prison sentence against 36-year-old Diana M. of Oud Gastel on Wednesday. She is suspected of secretly stealing money from her grandfather for years, totaling in about 200 thousand euros, Omroep Brabant reports. M.'s husband Marcel de G. is believed to be her accomplice. The Prosecutor demanded 5 months in prison against him. In 2007 the woman and her grandfather agreed that she would withdraw 150 euros from his account every month - 50 euros for groceries and 100 euros for cash. But it did not end there. Soon M. was paying for her own shopping, her own fuel and even her own mortgage with her grandfather's money. In 2009 the woman started transferring thousands of euros a month from her grandfather's account to her own. The grandfather discovered that the money was gone on his 86th birthday. He reported his granddaughter and her husband. He died three months later. In court M. confessed to stealing "about half" of the 110 thousand euros she transferred from her grandfather's account to her own. She blames her husband, saying that she was afraid of him, that he threatened her and always demanded more things. "He grabbed me by the throat", she said. Husband De G. denies these accusations. According to him, his wife handled the finances and he did not interfere. According to the broadcaster, De G. has a criminal record including threats, assault, drunk driving and driving away from an accident. The court is expected to rule on this case over two weeks.
