Housing firm refuses apartment to HIV patient growing own cannabis

Housing firm Eigen Haard gave Amsterdam HIV patient Rudolf Hillebrand an ultimatum - either stop cultivating his own cannabis, or leave his apartment. This is despite the fact that the court ruled that Hillebrand can continue growing his own cannabis. Last week the court in Amsterdam ruled that Hillebrand may continue growing his own medicinal marijuana. He uses the cannabis to fight nausea after taking his HIV medication. The Netherlands does have a designated firm that cultivates medicinal marijuana, but the available varieties does not work for him. His happiness with the ruling did not last long however, Het Parool reports. Eigen Haard contacted Hillebrand and told him if he wants to continue growing his own cannabis in house, he will have to move. "We would like him to continue living in his house, but without home cultivation", a spokesperson for the housing firm said to the newspaper. "A house is not intended to be a greenhouse. It is our experience that fires are often caused by home cultivation and that sometimes people die. It is dangerous for the resident and for the neighbors. In addition we can be punished and may get insurance problems." Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan promised last week that he will work to make sure that Hillebrand gets the marijuana he needs. A solution is being sought with both involved parties.
