David Bowie's death casts dark shadow on Groninger Museum exhibit

British singer David Bowie passed away at the age of 69 on Sunday after an 18 month long battle with cancer, his family announced and his son confirmed on Twitter. The Groninger Museum is currently hosting an exhibition on the pop icon's career called Dawid Bowie is. The exhibition can be viewed until March 13th. The museum is shocked by the the artist's death. "We still can't believe it", the museum posted on Twitter. "I am in complete shock. It feels as if we lost a family member", museum director Andreas Bluhm said to the Telegraaf. "I knew that he was sick, but he was very active with a musical and Friday he still released a new album. Bowie-expert Ad Visser told me that you get the impression that he is thinking about the end. But that we lost him so quickly, is hard to understand." On Twitter the museum states that their website is struggling under large amounts of traffic and that they are working on resolving the problem.

The David Bowie exhibition is the only exhibit that is open in the museum today, from noon until 6:00 p.m. All other exhibits are closed. Visitor's can also sign a condolence book in the entry hall, no ticket necessary. The collection shown in the exhibition consists of more than 300 items form the David Bowie archive, including original costumes, handwritten song lyrics, photos and other rare material. The Groninger Museum is the last scheduled stop for the exhibit, which was previously hosted by Toronto, Paris and Melbourne, among others. The museum also has Bowie's newest album Blackstar, released on the singer's 69th birthday on Friday, on sale. In addition the the exhibition, numerous David Bowie-themed events are organized in and around Groningen.
