High unemployment discovered among late 1990s refugees

Only a third of the refugees who arrived in the Netherlands between 1995 and 1999 have jobs of more than 30 hours a week, according to joint research by the Social and Cultural Planning Office, the Research and Documentation Center and the Scientific Council for Government Policy, BNR reports. The institutions conducted a survey among 33 thousand asylum seekers with residency permits who arrived in the Netherlands between 1995 and 1999 and stayed until at least 2011. If looked at jobs of 8 hours a week or more, slightly more than half of these residency permit holders are employed. The institutions urges the government to immediately start working on integrating status holders into Dutch society, before the large group of new asylum seekers in the Netherlands end up dependent on welfare.
