Amsterdam social housing tenants asked about taking refugee roommates

Housing corporation De Key in Amsterdam has asked its 997 group housing residents whether they would be willing to have refugee with a residency permit live with them. According to the corporation, they have already received some positive feedback. Unlike ordinary social housing, people living in group housing have a say in who the new tenant will be, a spokesperson for De Key explained to newspaper Trouw. "We wanted to give the tenants this idea as a suggestion", the spokesperson said. "For example, we also have students among our tenants, maybe they would be willing to take in a young refugee." According to De Key, there are many single people among refugees that could do well in one of their 123 group houses. This would also relieve the pressure on asylum centers, where some 16 thousand permit holders are still living because their is no social housing available for them.
