Suspect in politician’s murder tried escaping from jail

Bart van U. tried to escape from the Penitentiary Psychiatric Center in Scheveningen, where he is imprisoned on suspicion of murdering former politician Els Borst and the murder of his sister Lois. The escape attempt happened on Thursday, October 29th, newspaper AD reports based on sources from within the prison. Van U. was heading to the bathroom when he climbed over a fence and managed to get onto the penitentiary center's roof. He was overpowered at a height of more than 10 meters. He was then placed in solitary confinement before being transferred to the isolation ward in Vught. According to the newspaper, the staff at the prison reported the fence Van U. managed to climb over as a weakness in security years ago, but nothing was ever done about it. The Ministry of Security and Justice confirmed to the newspaper that there had been a failed escape attempt in Scheveningen. "The prisoner did not get out of the security ring."
