Police dogs used on Breda streets to bust drug users

Police in Breda have decided to increase the use of drug sniffing dogs in and around the city's entertainment areas. The specially trained and certified dogs sniff passing pedestrians and the police officers search the suspect if the dog reacts. The use of the drug sniffing dog has already led to two arrests this past weekend. At 00:15 a.m. on Saturday, a 27-year-old was arrested for being in possession of six ecstasy pills and four grams of cannabis. He was given a fine of 650 euros. About 10 minutes later a 22-year-old was arrested holding 10 ecstasy pills. He was given 50 hours of community service. The Mayor, Public Prosecutor and the police chief have decided to make more use of this tactic in response to complaints from angry residents about the increase of drug use and trafficking around the entertainment center. The sniffer dogs and their police officers will be deployed in parks, parking lots and along roads in and around the entertainment center in Breda, with increased frequency over weekends in the coming months. Nine pedestrians were discovered in possession of drugs during their first deployment in late September. The police have stated on their website that they intend to keep Breda safe. Those who visit the city's entertainment areas to socialize and have good intentions will be welcome, while any instances of disturbance, discrimination, and drugs or alcohol abuse will be addressed.
