Weightlifter’s dumbbells cause floor collapse fear

Rescuers responding to reports of a ceiling collapse at a Vlaardingen apartment found that a weightlifter's dumbbell caused the problem. The heavy weight was dropped, smashing a hole in the floor of a third-floor apartment and the ceiling of a second-storey dwelling, housing corporation Waterweg Wonen revealed. The weightlifter reportedly saw the dumbbell fall through the floor, but luckily there were no injuries. Damage to the female neighbor's ceiling covered an area of roughly 80 x 50 centimeters. She was not home at the time of the accident The incident took place at an apartment block on Professor Teldersstraat. The woman was allowed back into the building on Wednesday to collect personal belongings, as she was temporarily relocated. An investigation into the accident is ongoing. "The study is considering whether the damage was caused by the weight being dropped one time, or by the weight being dropped frequently," the housing corporation said. The downstairs neighbor will not have to contribute to the cost of the repair, the company added. An elderly women living in the building told RTV Rijnmond that she has contacted the police and the housing association on numerous occasions about the "disturbed" weightlifter, yet nothing has been done. The housing corporation confirmed that they have received complaints in the past, but would not comment on the nature of those complaints.
