Over half of Netflix users share subscription with others

Netflix is the most shared video streaming service in the Netherlands, with more than half of its subscribers sharing their accounts with others. This is according to a study done by Telecompaper in August of this year. With all the available media streaming services, such as HBO Go, Sport1 Go, Film 1 Go and Videoland Unlimited, 42 percent of Dutch users share their subscriptions. Men and women appear to be equally willing to share their subscriptions, with both groups being around the market average. The biggest differences are between age groups. Slightly more than 40 percent of the people between the ages of 12 and 29 years indicated that they do not share their streaming subscriptions outside the household. Among people between the ages of 50 and 64 years, 81 percent indicated that they do not share their streaming subscriptions. According to Telecompaper, Netflix is the largest video-on-demand service in the Netherlands, with 1.1 billion subscriptions during the second quarter of this year. Netflix offers three services with which 1, 2 or 4 accounts can watch videos at the same time. Of all the video-on-demand services, Netflix subscriptions are most often shared with people outside the household, such as friends, neighbors or extended family, with half of Netflix subscribers doing so. About a fifth of HBO Go subscribers share their accounts with others. Spotify is much less frequently shared, with only 8 percent of subscribers sharing their accounts.
