Amsterdam east subway to get €57 million facelift

The metro stations on Amsterdam's Oostlijn will soon get their first major renovation in nearly 40 years. The revamp will cost 57 million euros and take a total of two years. The municipality made this announcement on Tuesday, Het Parool reports. Construction company Hegeman won the tender The renovation will start from March next year and will include five underground stations and 11 above ground stations on the metro line between Amsterdam Central and Amsterdam-Zuidoost. The metros will continue to run during the renovations. Only the three stations that have only one entrance - Gaasperplas, Venserpolder and Verrijn Stuartweg - will be closed for two months. During this time, no metros will stop at these stations, but transport company GVB will arrange replacement bus transport. The revamp will bring more light and space into the stations. There will be glass elevators and atriums to let more daylight in. Al ticket machines, SOS posts and information centers will be moved to one wall. The renovations are expected to be done in the spring of 2018.
