Prosecutor may stop using temporary workers after Bart van U. mistakes

The Public Prosecutor will likely no longer make use of temporary workers at hearings after the damning report on the events surrounding Bart van U., the man suspected of murdering his sister and former Minister Els Borst. A spokesperson for justice sad this to NRC in response to the Hoekstra committee report, which was released on Thursday. The Advocate General who had to make a decision on Bart van U.'s prosecution in 2012 was a temporary worker. Among other things, this so-called honorary AG failed to have Van U. imprisoned and was barely accessible to the police. The College of Prosecutors General will now "carefully" consider whether they will make use of this honorary AG's services again, and in doing so will also examine whether it still makes sense to make use of any such temporary workers. "The function of Advocate-General places high demands on professional responsibility. Clear quality requirements are therefore imposed", the spokesperson said. "It is very doubtful if these quality demands are compatible with an attorney general that is deployed on an occasional basis."
