Suspect held in Amsterdam postal worker shooting

Police in Amsterdam arrested a 49-year-old man in connection with the shooting of a postal worker several months ago. The victim was struck several times as he was ending his PostNL shift at about 11 p.m. on February 17 on Australiëhavenweg in the city’s Westelijk Havengebied neighborhood.

The suspect was taken into custody last week. Police did not detail allegations against that person, nor did they say if they believe they arrested the shooter. More arrests are possible, police stated. The victim was headed to his home in the Geuzenveld district of Amsterdam. The gunman stalked the victim to the viaduct at Australiëhavenweg and Westrandweg, got out of his car, and shot the postal worker multiple times, police said. “Although he survived, he was severely traumatized by what happened. He is especially anxious because before shooting him, the gunman said, “For the next time.” A day later, police said they wanted to speak with a light-skinned man in a darker-colored vehicle. He was later described as being between 20 and 25 years old, standing 1.8-meters tall, thin, with a hooded jacket, and possibly of either North African or Arabic descent. Investigators found a car engulfed in flames on the A2 at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel just after the shooting. No robbery took place at the time of the incident, and police said it was unlikely the shooting was connected to the the ongoing gang assassinations plaguing Amsterdam since 2012.
