Wageningen to launch basic income experiment

The city of Wageningen is getting closer to launching in which welfare recipients can collect a monthly amount of 1100 euros, reports De Gelderlander. All other support from municipality is then abolished, however there are no restrictions for reception such as applying for jobs. “People will [then] work more, because their earnings are not withdrawn from the benefits they receive”, D66 councilor and the initiator of the experiment is quoted saying. He is hoping for support from GroenLinks and PvdA to win the majority on the plan. Other cities are discussing similar projects as well. The idea is that every Dutchman receives a lump sum, even if they are working. In this way, a whole range of subsidies and benefits is abolished. Wageningen University should do the research during the experiment and report on policy consequences.
