Police open fire in high-speed pursuit through Amsterdam

A motorcycle police officer fired his gun at a dark-colored Audi in Amsterdam's Geuzenveld neighborhood early Wednesday morning, reports Het Parool. The occupants of the Audi are suspected of breaking into a cigar shop in Haarlem around 1:30 a.m., according to the newspaper. A police officer responding to the scene of the break-in saw the Audi speeding away in the direction of Amsterdam. The Haarlem police notified the Amsterdam police, who launched a search for the vehicle, also deploying a helicopter. The Audi was spotted on Lambertus Zijlplein in Amsterdam West and the police gave chase. During the chase, the Audi tried to run down a motorcycle cop, who then fired at the vehicle. In so far as the police know, no one was injured, says a statement on the police website. The exact circumstances of the shooting are being investigated by the office of Veiligheid, Integriteit en Klachten (safety, integrity and complaints). The Audi was later found on Marchanthof. The police suspect that the three or four suspects who were in the car fled further on foot. The vehicle turned out to be stolen. So far no one has been arrested and the police are continuing the investigation.
