Albanian refugees deported to Netherlands died trying to escape

Two Albanian refugees died after jumping off a passenger ferry into the North Sea and trying to swim back to the UK shore on February 26th last year, The Guardian reports based on a British inquest. Artur Doda (24) and Leonard Isufaj (27) had been deported from Essex in Britain and were on their way to the Netherlands. An eyewitness saw the two jumping overboard an hour into the journey. According to the inquest, Doda died almost instantly from injuries he obtained by being sucked into the propellers of the ferry. Isufaj drowned in the strong currents. Their bodies were not immediately recovered, despite a search involving 21 vessels and 2 helicopters. Isofaj's body was found washed up on a beach in Felixtowe on March 20th last year. Doda's body was found floating in the North Sea on April 29th. "They were intending to swim back to England, something that they could see was tantalizingly close to them. In fact they did not know about the effect of a moving ship on somebody who jumps over the side and they were sucked underneath." said coroner Eleanor McGann, recording an accidental death verdict. "This is all part of a bigger picture on immigration and how it's handled, and nothing more I could say could help prevent such sad deaths in the future." "We see a lot of these particular cases and the same people will turn up two or three times. We have individuals this year who are already on their second attempt and it is only March", said Giles Young, a senior officer with Border Force at Harwich International Port. "The Dutch sometimes release them into Holland and then they try again. It's a carousel system."
