Cleaner falls through manhole, dies in cesspit
An employee of Helma Reinigingsdienst (cleaning service) fell into a manhole in the in the Oisterwijksedreef in Haaren on Tuesday night. The emergency services took him out of the cesspit with ropes.
The emergency service tried to resuscitate the man, but with no success. A spokesman for the fire department confirmed that the man died on the spot.
The sewer in Haaren and surroundings is currently being renovated. Local residents have been complaining for weeks about problems with the cesspit connected to the sewer.
Several employees of the cleaning company Helma from Goirle were working on the Oisterwijksedreef when the man fell into the cesspit. It is unclear exactly how that happened. Colleagues noticed that the man was gone around 19:30. They found him in the pit soon after.
The accident slowed the train traffic between Boxtel and Tilburg. The cesspit is connected to the sewer that runs under the track.
