Dutch MPs question Ukraine MH17 response

The Second Chamber is looking for clarity from the Cabinet on the role of the Ukrainian search teams in the repatriation of the remains and belongings of the MH17 victims. A majority of the Chamber wonders how SES - the Ukrainian local agency for disaster management - managed to safeguard personal belongings. The Dutch repatriation mission has been suspended for weeks, due to the fact that the disaster area is unsafe. Last week Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that SES have been ordered to continue the search for the remains and belongings of the victims. During his weekly press conference he said that he is "furious" about the state of the investigation. He blames the Ukrainian government and the rebels for the fact that the search can't be continued due to the instability. Yet SES did manage to collect a lot of the victim's belongings. The VVD and the ChristenUnie wants to know why SES manages to get access to the area. The D66 wonders why the Cabinet did not approach the SES search teams earlier. "Now the SES only has about two weeks before winter falls," said Sjoerd Sjoerdsma. The CDA feels that the Cabinet owes the local Ukrainian population a compliment. "First the Cabinet accuses them of stealing wedding rings, and now they are asking the same people for help." said MP Pieter Omtzigt. The Chamber will debate the status of the investigation into the disaster of flight MH17 on Wednesday.
