Van der Vaart dropped from World Cup squad

Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart will not be able to join his teammates in Brazil for the World Cup due to a calf injury. Wesley Sneijder is being considered to fill his position on the field. This might not be a blow to the team, but it might be for Van der Vaart. It could be the 30-year old's last chance to play a World Cup. According to Ronald van der Geer, reporter for the NOS who was present at the Oranje training camp in Portugal, it is clear that Van der Vaart had difficulty in the training. Another possible replacement for Van der Vaart is Georgino Wijnaldum, who has also suffered various injuries, but is now in good physical condition, according to Van der Geer. The Netherlands will kick off their World Cup attempt with a match against Spain on June 13th.
