Oranje defender Dumfries joins Real Madrid from Inter Milan, reportedly for €20 million
Denzel Dumfries, Oranje defender, completed his transfer from Inter Milan to Real Madrid on Sunday, ending weeks of speculation over his future. He moved via a contract clause allowing him to leave for an alleged estimated fee of about 20 million euros.
Real Madrid and Inter Milan confirmed the deal in an official statement, saying the clubs had reached an agreement for the player’s transfer. They added that Dumfries is under contract for four seasons through June 30, 2030.
Dumfries, 30, leaves Inter after five seasons in Italy. He joined from PSV in 2021 for about 14 million euros while still under contract for two additional years.
He began his career in the Netherlands with BVV Barendrecht as an amateur at age 18, then moved to Sparta Rotterdam in 2014. He later played for SC Heerenveen before joining PSV in 2018, where he became a regular starter but did not win trophies.
At Inter Milan, Dumfries won two Serie A titles, three domestic cups, and three Super Cups. Last season, Inter reached the UEFA Champions League final, losing 5–0 to Paris Saint-Germain.
With the Netherlands, Dumfries made his senior debut at age 22 under coach Ronald Koeman and has earned 76 caps. At the current World Cup, he played in all matches and provided assists in a 5–1 win over Sweden and a 3–1 win over Tunisia. The Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco.
Real Madrid said Dumfries becomes the ninth Dutch player to join the club after John Metgod, Clarence Seedorf, Ruud van Nistelrooij, Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and Rafael van der Vaart.
