DNA match of mystery leg found 26 years ago
Authorities have finally been able to find a DNA match for a leg that came ashore at Terschelling 26 years ago.
Cold case detectives linked the leg to a man who jumped off a ship sailing to the UK in June 1987. Nobody had seen him jump and his body was never retried, but he did leave a suicide note behind that was found on board the ship after his family reported him missing.
The cold case detectives reopened the case after a relative approached police last year, and provided DNA to run through the list of unidentified corpses. It matched the leg that washed up at Terschelling. Police informed the rest of the family of the break through.
