Mailbomb letters from Schiedam for Uganda pres

Uganda has intercepted nine suspected letter bombs that originated from Schiedam and were addressed to, among other public figures, President Yoweri Museveni. While mail bombs are usually explosive devices sent via the postal service to injure or kill the recipient, the letters from Schiedam contained organic material and chemicals that are used in the graphics industry. Laboratorial examinations have meanwhile shown that the contents were not dangerous to human life. Junior Internal Affairs Minister James Baba on Thursday told Parliament that the alleged parcels came from P. O Box 7007, 3109AA Schiedem. He said the letters were picked by police from the post office. Aside from President Museveni, the alleged mail bombs were sent to Museveni’s brother-in-law Sam Kutesa, opposition leader Kizza Besigye, Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago and Uganda People’s Congress party leader Olara Otunnu. The Dutch Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed that it has learned of the letters through the press, but that Uganda has not formally sought contact. A spokesperson said the Netherlands has taken a wait and see position. “The investigation is in the hands of the authorities in Uganda,” the spokesperson said.
