Selfie is 'the word of the year'

Dictionary publisher Van Dale said that 'selfie' has been selected as 'the word of the year' in the Netherlands, the NRC reports Tuesday. Selfie / Wikipedia Overall, 22,000 people voted to select the world of the year, with selfie took 32% of the votes, the NRC said. Selfie stands for a self-portrait mostly taken by smartphone. In 2002, the word selfie was first used on an online forum in Australia, according to NRC.
