Bank guarantee Arctic Sunrise almost ready
The bank guarantee for the release of the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise is almost ready, reported a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.The International Maritime Tribunal ruled last Friday that the Arctic Sunrise and its crew will be free to go, as soon as the Netherlands has given a bank guarantee of EUR 3.6 million euros to Russia. Even though Russia announced not to recognize the Tribunal's authority, Netherlands is carrying out its ruling. The bank guarantee the Tribunal ordered is ready, short of a few minor details. It should definitely be ready by Friday.

Among them are the Dutch Greenpeace activists Faiza Oulahsen and Mannes Ubels. Greenpeace will ensure that taxpayers won't need to contribute to the bank guarantee the Maritime Tribunal imposed on the Netherlands in the case of the Arctic Sunrise, according to Jasper Teulings, lawyer for Greenpeace, Thursday. Teulings said the environmental organization will pay for the costs the provision of the guarantee entails. Should the tribunal later decide the Netherlands has to actually pay Russia, Greenpeace will compensate the Netherlands. This case should not cost the Dutch taxpayer a penny, states Teulings. The Netherlands stood up for the interest of the international legal system to free the crew and the ship. Greenpeace will use own funding to compensate the costs.
