Frans Timmermans Applaudes Iran Nuclear Deal

Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans said he is delighted with an agreement signed between Iran and United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia and China in Geneva. Under the agreement, Iran will stop expanding its nuclear program for a period of six months. The deal will restrict Iran’s nuclear program. In return, the EU3+3 agreed that sanctions against Iran would be eased, albeit on a limited, temporary and reversible basis. Additionally, some Iranian assets frozen in overseas accounts will be released. “I’m delighted with this breakthrough, which is the result of 10 years of negotiations between the E3+3 and Iran,” Timmermans said. “We still need to study the details, but it looks like a robust interim agreement. It sets clear limits on the Iranian nuclear program for at least the next six months and provides better scope for supervision. Of course, the important things now are implementation and follow-up. But it’s great that the agreement is in place.” The international community, including the Netherlands, has for years been pressing Iran to be fully transparent regarding its nuclear program, cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and meet its international obligations under resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and the IAEA.
