More young people to hospital due to alcohol

The number of young people who ended up in hospital because of alcohol, has increased fourfold between 2001 and 2011. This is clear from the Annual Report of the National Drug Monitor of the Trimbos Institute. In 2001, 263 young people ended up in a hospital with an alcohol related problem. In 2011 the number increased to more than a thousand, 1087 to be specific. According to the Trimbos the reason for the dramatic increase is in part the subject received more attention. Hospitals and pediatricians started focusing more on the issue. license: public domain cco The number of young people between 11 and 17 years who were treated for alcohol poisoning, declined in 2012 for the first time, according to pediatricians. There were 706 cases, 60 fewer than in 2011. These initial numbers are hopeful, states Margriet van Laar, program manager at the Trimbos Drug Monitoring. A lot has improved in addressing alcohol consumption among young people, especially in the age group of 12-15, according to Van der Laar.
