Dutch Researchers Testing GPS System to Prevent Traffic Jams

Dutch researchers are working to develop a new GPS navigation system that aims to put an end to traffic jams. The new system connected to a smartphone app will tell drivers when to change lanes. Tests will be carried out in April 2013 on a 75-kilometre (km) stretch of motorway passing through the Netherlands, from Germany to Belgium, Daily Telegraph reports. Free Google GPS Nav / Flickr Dutch GPS navigation equipment specialist TomTom and Delft University are also involved in the research. The new system aimed at preventing motorway traffic jams by telling drivers which lane to move to. It, however, will work if at least 30%-40% of drivers on a certain stretch of motorway are using it.
