Anti-Cholesterol Drugs May Slow Down Dementia

Based on the results of a clinical test, statins (drugs to help lower cholesterol levels), might aid in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. A recent study in the Netherlands has confirmed its benefits, especially in slowing down Alzheimer’s disease.

The University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, found the benefits of these drugs. There were 342 patients in a memory clinic for Alzheimer’s disease who participated in the research. For three years, the team assessed and monitored them. Half of the 129 patients who have high cholesterol levels received statins. Another 105 patients with high cholesterol did not receive treatment while the rest had normal cholesterol levels. During the period of the study, all the patients’ health declined. However, patients who were receiving statins deteriorated at a slower rate. The next step is to decide if statins must be prescribed to prevent and manage dementia.
