Manhole Covers Stolen

In Veendam, a town in the province of Groningen, more than 40 manhole covers have been stolen in the last few weeks. This can cause serious accidents if road users do not see the uncovered holes. The police have no idea who stole them and ask witnesses to report to their office. They suspect that the covers are traded as old iron. NOS.nl reports that no accidents have occurred but that it is especially dangerous for cyclists when they do not see the holes. The municipality has immediately replaced the stolen covers, but the thefts are causing a major expense. A cover, which weighs about 20 kilograms, costs about 100 euro.
