Netherlands announces €500 million military aid package for Ukraine
The Dutch government has announced a new 500 million euro military support package for Ukraine. Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz said that 250 million euros will be used to buy drones from Dutch arms manufacturers, while the remaining 250 million euros will be spent on weapons sourced from the United States.
The new aid package was unveiled by Yeşilgöz during talks with Mykhailo Fedorov, her Ukrainian counterpart. The announcement reflects the close defence ties between the two countries. The Netherlands entered into a ten-year security partnership with Ukraine in 2024 and has remained a key supporter of Kyiv throughout its more than four-year war against Russia.
Dutch support for Ukraine's drone sector has already reached approximately 1 billion euros. As recently as two months ago, Yeşilgöz pledged an additional 248 million euros toward drone production.
Unmanned systems play an increasingly central role in the war, ranging from aerial drones to robotic vehicles and maritime craft. Ukrainian authorities say drones are responsible for the majority of Russian losses at the front.
Yeşilgöz called the arrangement a “unique collaboration” that provides advantages for both the Dutch defense sector and the military. During the visit, the two officials signed a letter of intent aimed at deepening cooperation on defense innovation and technological development.
Fedorov emphasized that the value of Dutch assistance lies not only in its scale but also in its sophistication. He highlighted systems such as MIM-104 Patriot air defence missiles and F-16 Fighting Falcon jets, which he said have been vital to Ukraine's defense. As an example, he cited a large Russian cruise missile strike on Kyiv that damaged the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. According to Fedorov, Ukrainian F-16s intercepted a significant number of the missiles during the attack.
