Oranje Leeuwinnen relegated to World Cup play-offs despite 3-1 win over Poland
A 3-1 victory over Poland was not enough to earn the Netherlands women's team automatic qualification for next year's World Cup. Oranje's hopes rested on Ireland taking points off France, but a 1-0 French win ensured Les Bleues topped the group and booked a direct place at the tournament in Brazil. The Dutch side must now progress through the play-offs to reach the World Cup.
The Oranje Leeuwinnen now face a play-off route to the World Cup, requiring victories over two opponents this autumn. Their qualification campaign resumes with a two-legged tie in October, with the draw taking place on June 18. Oranje will be seeded and therefore avoid the highest-ranked European nations in the opening round.
A shock 3-2 loss to Ireland on Friday left Arjan Veurink's side with little margin for error. The defeat meant the Netherlands no longer controlled their own fate and had to rely on Ireland taking points off France on Tuesday to have any chance of finishing top of the group.
The Oranje Leeuwinnen had struggled to overcome Poland throughout the World Cup qualifiers. Their previous meeting in March finished 2-2, while Veurink's first match in charge last October ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Poland were without their biggest name for this latest encounter, however, as FC Barcelona forward Ewa Pajor did not start for the side ranked 29th in the world.
With Marisa Olislagers and Daniëlle van de Donk replacing Janou Levels and Ella Peddemors, Veurink’s side started brightly. A promising move featuring Romeo Leuchter and Esmee Brugts failed to produce a clear chance, and the hosts soon slipped into a pattern of conceding possession cheaply. Poland nearly capitalised, as Paulina Tomasiak twice caused problems on the break midway through the first half.
Wieke Kaptein gave the Netherlands a deserved lead midway through the first half, heading in Brugts' cross to spark celebrations among the 8,000 fans in Almelo. For a brief period, hopes of direct World Cup qualification were alive, but news of France's opening goal against Ireland in Grenoble soon dampened the mood inside the stadium.
The visitors emerged from the break with renewed intent and appeared to level the score through captain Paulina Dudek just three minutes into the second half. Their celebrations were short-lived, though, as the assistant referee immediately signalled for offside.
A largely quiet second half burst into life after 60 minutes when substitute Kerstin Casparij set up Leuchter, who finished brilliantly with a volley into the near post.
The Dutch then appeared to put the game beyond doubt as Liz Rijsbergen scored just five minutes into her cameo to make it 3-0.
Poland quickly pulled one back from the spot through Ewelina Kamczyk after Damaris Egurrola conceded a penalty, keeping some tension in the closing stages.
France's slim advantage while down to 10 players offered Oranje a glimmer of hope, but Ireland were unable to find the goal that would have sent the group race to a dramatic conclusion.
