ASML invites Elon Musk to internal tech event, prompting employee backlash
Chip equipment maker ASML has invited Elon Musk to speak at a closed internal technology conference and is facing negative internal reactions over the decision, the company confirmed Saturday following reporting by the Eindhovens Dagblad.
Musk will join virtually to “share his vision on AI, robotics, space exploration, and semiconductor production,” ASML said through a spokesperson.
“ASML regularly invites technology leaders from the industry to share their insights. The invitation to Elon Musk took place in the context of the Terafab project, which is highly relevant to the semiconductor industry,” the company said.
Musk announced plans in March to develop his own chips for artificial intelligence, robotics, and data centers in space.
“Through Terafab, Musk and his team become part of the broader ecosystem of our industry, and many companies, including ASML, will collaborate within this initiative. As previously announced, ASML leadership has discussed this project with Musk and considers Terafab a serious development,” the company added.
According to the Eindhovens Dagblad, the invitation has triggered critical responses on an internal ASML communication channel. Some employees reportedly cited the tech billionaire’s political views, and several staff members are said to be considering boycotting the event.
ASML did not respond directly to questions about the internal reactions. The company said, “ASML is committed to an inclusive work environment in which everyone feels valued and respected, can fully contribute, and is free to express his or her opinion.”
The conference is restricted to employees and is intended to exchange knowledge and insights on new developments and research, ASML said. Topics Musk is expected to address are, according to the company, “relevant to our employees.”
