Search underway on Saba for Dutch man missing since a Wednesday morning hike

Authorities on the Caribbean island of Saba are carrying out an extensive search for Dutch tourist Erik Matthijsen, who was reported missing after he failed to return from a hike. Matthijsen was last seen at approximately 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday after setting out on a walk from the Well’s Bay area, located in northwestern Saba.

Matthijsen, who is in his fifties, is known as an avid hiker. He is visiting Saba and is part of the team working on the construction of a new transmission tower, known as the Mount Scenery Tower project.

Search efforts are now focused on the area between Middle Island and the Sulphur Mine Trail. Based on an analysis of camera footage, other hiking routes have been ruled out, said the KPCN, the local police force in charge of the search and rescue mission.

The search effort includes the use of helicopters, drones, and thermal cameras, particularly during nighttime operations. Authorities have also attempted to track his mobile phone. Multiple teams are involved, including the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF), the Coast Guard, Marines, and staff from the construction company HANAB, all contributing to the intensive search effort.

Local authorities strongly advised residents and visitors against conducting their own search for the missing man, citing the highly dangerous and steep terrain in the Ladder Bay, Middle Island, North Coast, and All Too Far trails.

Police have also requested that the designated trails remain clear to ensure that rescue teams can operate without interference.
