European Commission opens 40,000 free train passes for 18-year-olds in Europe

The European Commission has reported the opening of a new round of applications for 40,000 DiscoverEU travel passes, offering 18-year-olds across the European Union and Erasmus+ associated countries the chance to receive a free rail travel package to explore Europe.

The application period runs from April 8 to April 22, closing at 12 p.m. CET on April 22. The initiative is part of the Erasmus+ program and is tied to European Youth Week 2026.

Eligible applicants must be born between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008. They are required to complete a selection quiz consisting of five questions about the European Union and one additional question on the European Youth Portal. The 40,000 passes will be awarded based on applicant ranking until the allocation is exhausted. DiscoverEU is a structured support program rather than general access to train travel.

Successful applicants will be able to travel for up to 30 days between July 1, 2026, and September 30, 2027, with travel typically structured within a one-month period and limited to seven travel days.

Participants may plan independent routes or follow suggested itineraries, including the DiscoverEU Culture Route, which highlights destinations linked to architecture, music, fine art, theater, fashion, and design.

Beyond free rail travel, the pass includes a DiscoverEU discount card offering reduced prices on public transport, cultural events, accommodation, food, sports, and other services in participating countries.

Additional support measures are available for participants with disabilities, health conditions, or those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. This can include funding for an accompanying person and extra financial support through the DiscoverEU Inclusion Action. Special arrangements are also available for young people from islands, remote areas, outermost regions, and overseas territories.
