Victim in Capelle aan den IJssel police shooting identified as 17-year-old
The individual shot by police on Thursday evening in Capelle aan den IJssel has been identified as a 17-year-old local boy, according to the Public Prosecution Service (OM). Officers discovered a firearm on him at the scene, which was at the Reviusrondeel. He was immediately taken to the hospital, and authorities have not released any further information about his condition.
Authorities say the boy had been seen near a car that was allegedly involved earlier on Thursday in a robbery on Borndiep, a street in the Middelwatering district. Reports say that the incident occurred when officers tried to stop and search the car’s occupants, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon. The 17-year-old boy was struck, while the remaining people in the vehicle fled the scene. The OM added that a gun may have been seen during the robbery.
Following the shooting at the Reviusrondeel, the car linked to the boy drove off, possibly with several people inside. Police are actively trying to locate them, and the incident is being investigated by the National Police Internal Investigations Service.
Mayor Joost Manusama called the incident “a concerning trend in youth-related incidents” and stressed that it requires “our constant attention to reverse these negative developments.” In September 2025, police shot and killed a 15-year-old boy from Gouda at a McDonald's in the municipality after a violent robbery.
Manusama added that authorities must first await the outcome of the National Police Internal Investigations Service investigation. In the Netherlands, this is the routine procedure whenever a police officer discharges a firearm. The inquiry will assess whether the force used was necessary, proportionate, and compliant with official use-of-force regulations.
