Rijkswaterstaat warns of extreme delays as multiple highways close tonight

Rijkswaterstaat has warned that several highway construction projects across the Netherlands tonight may lead to major delays and heavy traffic. Motorists should anticipate longer travel times and heavier traffic during the evening rush and later hours, especially on highways with major closures like the A2 highway and A58 highway. Rijkswaterstaat recommends planning for 30 to 60 extra minutes on most journeys, noting that delays could be even longer because multiple roadworks are taking place simultaneously.

Rijkswaterstaat indicates that traffic congestion may increase over the weekend due to the many planned roadworks across the country. More closures and changed lanes mean that more vehicles will use diversion routes, leading to traffic jams, especially around major cities and key highways.

Major traffic disruptions are expected on the A2 this weekend. Starting tonight at 9 p.m., the southbound lanes toward Den Bosch will be shut down between Maarssen and Oudenrijn. Road users are advised to follow diversions and account for substantial extra travel time. Authorities warn that the heaviest gridlock is likely to occur this evening and tomorrow.

The A58 between the De Stok interchange and the Zoomland interchange (toward Bergen op Zoom) has been closed since last night at 9 PM until Monday morning, March 9, at 5 AM due to roadworks. Rijkswaterstaat warns of additional travel time of up to about 30 minutes and possible traffic jams.

The A27 Merwede Bridge turnoff at Gorinchem is fully closed to all through traffic in both directions. Vehicles traveling between Utrecht and Breda are being rerouted on a large scale via the A12, A20, and A16.

The A4 is fully closed in the direction of Amsterdam between Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk and Roelofarendsveen.

Rijkswaterstaat warns drivers to avoid the highway if possible during rush hour. Check real-time traffic information via the ANWB Onderweg app or RWS traffic info just before departure to see how severe congestion currently is, and consider leaving later, using public transport, carpooling, or working from home to avoid disruption.
