Helmond man sentenced to eight years jail for decade-long sexual abuse of 20 children
The Den Bosch court has sentenced 26-year-old Wesley W. from Helmond to eight years in prison plus involuntary psychiatric treatment for years of sexually abusing children. Prosecutors had recommended a 15-year prison term along with the same psychiatric measure.
W. abused the children over a ten-year period, initially while working as a babysitter in private homes and later as a teaching assistant at a primary school in his hometown. The victims ranged in age from 2 to 10 years old. W. began the abuse when he was just 15 years old.
W. confessed to nearly all the charges and had recorded the abuse on video. He was arrested in September 2024 and has been convicted of abusing 20 children.
The court stated that the defendant severely violated the sexual and physical integrity of 20 young children, “continuously pushing boundaries.” In one instance, he incited a brother and sister to perform sexual acts on one another.
The court emphasized that the defendant's actions have left deep scars within the families involved. “Their parents have been caused immense pain and grief; they must now live with feelings of guilt, the uncertainty of how this will affect their children’s future development, and the constant fear that videos of the abuse might eventually circulate online.”
The court handed down a lighter sentence than prosecutors had recommended, citing the defendant’s diminished criminal responsibility due to his disorders. Judges also considered that part of the abuse was committed while he was still a minor, that he confessed to nearly all of the offenses, and that he fully cooperated with the investigation, including admitting acts that were hard to prove. His young age further contributed to the reduced sentence.
The ruling sparked outrage from a father in the courtroom. After the sentence was announced, he shouted, “Next time, I’ll deal with him myself! Eight years, are you kidding me? What kind of circus is this?”
The parents of the children abused by W. expressed emotional disappointment over the court’s ruling. “The parents are disappointed that, despite the high sentence recommended, it was capped at eight years,” said a spokesperson for Namens de Familie.
“There is also relief among the parents, as everything presented in this case has been proven, and the defendant was found guilty. For the parents, this is hugely significant, affirming that their children’s stories are recognized as the truth.”
W. was absent during the announcement of the sentence. “The parents saw this as disrespectful, feeling that he is shirking his responsibility,” the spokesperson said.
