Major disruptions at Amsterdam Central: night trains suspended, day services limited
Train passengers can expect significant disruption later this week as work at Amsterdam Central Station halts all overnight services from Thursday to Sunday, while daytime train traffic will be limited on multiple routes.
The NS says replacement buses will be in operation when trains are halted. Work begins around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, and that evening passengers will also be able to use the metro with their NS travel pass. On subsequent days, train traffic will come to a stop from midnight each night.
Trains heading to Amsterdam Central will terminate at Amsterdam Muiderpoort and Amsterdam Sloterdijk. Night train services between Schiphol, Amsterdam Central, and Utrecht Central will be replaced by buses.
ProRail is carrying out maintenance at Amsterdam Central, including work on cabling and on platform five. Additional works are planned in two and four weeks, during which train services will again be limited.
The current disruptions are part of a broader, long-term programme of works at Amsterdam Central Station. Last year, train services were also restricted for extended periods, including during a phase in March and April when the station was largely closed for renovation and track reconfiguration aimed at expanding capacity.
Passengers are advised to check the NS app or journey planner before departure, as schedules may change during the works. Where possible, travellers should use metro or bus services instead of direct trains to Amsterdam Central and allow extra time and transfers, particularly on international or longer-distance routes that normally pass through the station.
