Dom Tower welcomes 100,000th visitor in 2025, setting new record
The Dom Tower in Utrecht welcomed its 100,000th visitor of the year last Sunday, breaking the record set in 2017, when 92,000 people climbed the tower. This was reported by Utrecht Marketing, which operates the Dom Tower.
The Dom Tower, more than 700 years old, was recently undergoing a multi-year renovation, which Utrecht Marketing says had a noticeable impact on visitor numbers.
After Queen Máxima reopened the restored landmark in November 2024, the tower once again became a major attraction, drawing large crowds to its summit. Visitors can climb the tower via 465 steps, making the experience popular with both tourists and locals.
Utrecht Marketing reports that it’s not just the Dom Tower seeing record numbers; other heritage sites around Domplein are enjoying a standout year as well. The Dom Church welcomed its 500,000th visitor as early as October, while the underground Domplein, which has archaeological artifacts and exhibits, is drawing more visitors than ever before.
The city attracts an estimated 451,000 overnight visitors annually, representing roughly 2.3% of all overnight stays in the Netherlands. Earlier this year, the municipality of Utrecht announced its plans to avoid mass tourism, like that in Amsterdam, prioritizing high-quality growth and a more balanced spread of visitors throughout the city.
