Online supermarket Crisp set to post first profit this month
Online supermarket Crisp expects to make a profit for the first time this month, once adjustments are made for taxes and other factors. According to the grocery app, which was launched in 2018, this milestone is the result of structural improvements in previous years.
“One swallow doesn’t make a summer, of course, but this month shows that it’s possible,” says co-founder and CEO Tom Peeters. The Crisp app offers consumers in the Netherlands and Belgium mainly local and seasonal products from roughly nine hundred small-scale farmers, producers, and growers. “The market is challenging, but our community is loyal and expanding,” Peeters notes.
In its 2024 annual report, Crisp recorded a net loss, driven in part by high energy expenses and rising wages. However, this year the company has successfully cut costs and boosted product margins, bringing operational losses to zero over the course of 2025.
Crisp says it is benefiting from the growth of the online market, which is projected to rise by 7 to 8 percent this year.
The small rival of, for example, Picnic is targeting a structurally positive operating result next year. Until now, Crisp has used several distribution centers, but the company has decided to consolidate all logistics into a new facility in Amsterdam West.
